有個謎語：What's the difference between here and there?
答案是A little tea。
其實here和there的距離很大，也不能直接理解成中文的「這裡」和「那裡」。例如：
We are here today, and there tomorrow。不要照字面翻譯，這一句用來比喻人生苦短(there有點「另一個世界」的含義)，和中文"譬如朝露"的意思相似。
Here 和there在英語中都是常用詞，基本意思是"這裡"和"那裏"。如： It's five minutes' walk from here。(離這兒只有5分鐘的路程。) Here is the story。(情況是這樣的。) I disagree with you there。(在那一點上，我不同意你的看法。)
這兩個詞有許多習慣用法，尤其在口語中有多種含義，有時不易解釋，用體會得反而容易：

• Here we are. (到了。) 
• Here you are. (給、拿著、這就是你要的。把東西交給別人的時候也可如此使用)。
• Here's (a health) to you. (敬你一杯。)
• There you are. 這句話的意思比較多，可以表示"你說/猜對了"或者"這回可讓我逮住你了"，有時也可表示"瞧，我說對了吧。"
• There you go again. (你又來這一套了！)
• Are you there? (你聽得見我的話嗎？) 打電話時的常用語，不能解成"你在那兒嗎？"
• So there. (就這樣了。) 或 (這就是我的最後決定。)
• There, there! (好了、沒關係了。) 是一種安慰的口頭語。

英語中，不少習慣用語也同here和there有關，例如：(every) here and there意為「到處」；What you have said just now is neither here nor there. (你剛說的都是題外話。)
