我們重新定義什麼叫「生字」。不會用的字叫做生字，注意，不是不認識的字。讀文章時，不必花太多時間查單字，等單字查完了，也累得沒勁讀文章。讀以下這篇講話，特別要注意那些不曾出現在你的談話中的英文字──這就是你的生字、生詞。試著用「生字讀法」來讀下面這段對話：
Please don't come to me for everything. We can't consult with each other for trivial things. We are already working under great stress. Time is needed to check where we can get the best value for money. The accountant of the company needs to reconcile the purchases made against the invoices that come in, the system should be streamlined. Let me draw up a list of an primary area, or activities and circulate them in our office. We'll have to decide the areas where each of us has the main responsibility and then the areas where we are involved but not primarily responsible. We'll discuss it at the next meeting, let's say, next Monday...

粗體紅字，你也許認得，但卻未曾把這些字或詞用在你的口語表達上，它們就是你的生字，現在要把英文和商業見識一併磨光，就要把這些生字變成你的熟字。每天一段，你的商業speaking vocabulary 每天都在累積；只要三個月，所有你讀得懂的，都變成你可以用的。你平常就自己把這些「生字」畫出來，試著造句，試著解釋，試著問問題，不停地用它們，讓它們變成你的「熟字」！
