我們有時會問人：你們辦公室裏誰説了算？也就是誰作最後决定。美國人經常説：call the shots。
Call the shots也就是作最後决定。Call the shots的原來意思是：軍官下令部隊開槍。但是現在call the shots已經在口語中常常出現。

Call the shots 在字典中的解釋是：to be in a position to give orders，即"控制、掌握"。據《牛津大辭典》記載，Call the shots 此一片語在口語中已經流傳了很長的時間，但它的最早書面記錄是上世紀60年代，起初的意思為："明白無誤地表明自己的願望或想法"。

shot（射箭）為什麽會出現在這個片語當中呢？另一個片語call one's shots。Call one's shots是指在射箭之前射手必須宣佈射程目標；有時會有裁判替選手宣布目標，就有了call the shots。因此，call the shots就引申出"控制、掌握"的意義。

再來看幾個的例句:

1. You must do what I tell you because I'm calling the shots around here.

你必須聽我的話，因為我是這裏負責的人。

2. What do you always get to call the shots? I want to make some decisions too.

為什麽總是你在拿主意？我也想作决定.

3. Don't ask me when we get off work. I don't call the shots around here.

不要問我什麽時候我們可以下班. 在這裏我説話不算數.

4. To be a leader, you should know how to call the shots. 
作為領導，你應該知道怎麽做决斷。
